Mt 13, 1-23
At times, particularly as we grow more attentive to our inner world, it happens that listening to another person or reading a text resonates within us, producing a kind of “echo” that catches us by surprise.
Such resonance requires attention to our own inner life—distraction causes it to pass unnoticed—and reveals that what we have listened to or read was already within us, perhaps sleeping or unconscious.
I believe that such resonances are nothing other than the voice of wisdom expressing itself in each person. It is the “inner teacher” who, in a gentle, fitting and loving way, through intuitions that take the form of respectful invitation, seeks to guide us toward the truth of who we are.
Properly understood, it is the only teacher worthy of our complete assent. Directed toward any other “teacher,” our assent risks becoming submission and ending in alienation, fed by credulity.
Unlike those who seek our acceptance of their views, the inner teacher shows us the need to accept nothing we have not experienced ourselves. It is the invitation to walk the path of truth, letting go of secondhand beliefs or knowledge that, once accepted, become obstacles to truth taking root within us.
The invitation born from the inner teacher is fitting, respectful, humble and self-effacing. It is firm, but never stubborn, rigid or intolerant. And to the extent that we welcome it, it transforms us from within in alignment with the truth of who we really are.
