It is striking to see how often Jesus addresses his disciples to warn them against a false “messianic impatience” that does not know how to respect the rhythm of God’s discreet yet vigorous action.
To those who expect him to launch a forceful and overwhelming movement, capable of ending other currents and alternatives, Jesus speaks of a humbler and more respectful action of God. The world is a field of opposing sowings. And the kingdom of God grows there, in the density of that sometimes so ambiguous and complex life.
That is where God saves human beings. In those collective behaviors, animated at times by great ideals and at others by dark egoisms. In those thousands of gestures we make every day, where generosity mixes with the most unconfessable pettiness.
To those who expect the deployment of something spectacular and powerful, Jesus speaks of a simpler and more discreet reign of God. Something not made to trigger grandiose mass movements. The kingdom of God is already acting, but in the manner of a tiny and almost ridiculous mustard seed that germinates with humility, or like an imperceptible piece of yeast lost in the dough fermenting it from within.
We will not open the way for the kingdom of God by launching excommunications against other groups, parties, or ideologies, nor by condemning everything that does not match our thinking. We will not implant it in society by concentrating large masses or achieving the fleeting applause of the crowds.
The kingdom of God is a “yeast of humanity” and grows in every dark corner of the world where human beings are loved and where one strives for a more dignified humanity. We will open the way for the kingdom of God by allowing the strength of the gospel to transform our way of living, loving, working, enjoying, struggling, and being.
