Jesús Fernández, bishop of Córdoba, highlighted Cáritas’ commitment to helping vulnerable people regardless of their origin, stating that "the dignity of the person, of every person, does not depend on where they are born, but on the help they need".
In an interview with Europa Press, he recalled that Cáritas acts outside of political stances and always prioritizes support for people, regardless of their origin or condition. "Making divisions between poor people is not our mission", he added.
The bishop stressed that, for the organization, the primary thing is not the place of birth, but the need for help. This reflects the universalist approach Cáritas has in Córdoba, supporting whoever requires assistance.
Last year, Cáritas assisted 19,103 people, offering essential resources such as energy supply, housing, and educational support for children and young people, including school support.
Furthermore, Fernández highlighted the job training work through the social reintegration company Solemccor, where employment opportunities were also generated, thus expanding help beyond the immediate need.
The bishop affirmed that everything Cáritas has will be destined for whoever needs it, with the intention of "reaching everyone on equal terms", although he acknowledged that this will depend on available resources.
Regarding collaboration with public institutions, Fernández asked that "we do not give up, as there are many needs", and recalled that "dignity" does not depend on the place of origin, but on being "children of God", so the needy must be attended to without distinction.
He valued the good rapport with the provincial public administrations, mentioning a relationship that is "close and cordial". He especially highlighted contacts during his pastoral visit and collaboration on issues such as housing and the Welcome Home (Casa de Acogida), areas where the Church acts but requires institutional support.
Visit of León XIV
Regarding Pope Leo XIV’s visit to Spain, in which he participated as president of the Episcopal Commission for Social Pastoral Care, Fernández commented that this evidenced the broad activity of the Church, which goes beyond prayer and has a prominent public presence.
He highlighted the Pope’s compassion and commitment during his time at Cedia 24 Hours of Cáritas in Madrid, Brians prison in Catalonia, and the port of Arguineguín, where he showed closeness to immigrants through speeches, prayers, and symbolic gestures, such as throwing flowers into the sea.
Finally, he stated that "with his words, the Holy Father urges us all to lift our gaze to discover the dignity of the poor, and to encourage ourselves to accompany them too, as a Church, as a society, without being afraid of their presence, because truly, as the Holy Father made very clear, dignity is not a matter of borders; it is not lost by crossing a border".
