COMMENTARY ON THE GOSPEL Mt 10, 26-33
The Gospel of this Sunday is a small fragment that is part of the great discourse that Jesus delivers, in intimacy, to his friends with whom he will share his project of “new humanity”. Matthew increases the depth and density of the instructions he offers them so that they may see clearly, not only how to live but the consequences of that way of living; in some way it is about making them aware of the implicit and explicit risks they run by being coherent and living with authenticity their adherence to Jesus’ movement. He does not offer them an easy, popular life, but rather they will be uncomfortable for those who seek a different life, more superficial, materialistic, ideologized or dehumanized. For all this they will be rejected and misunderstood.
The text begins with a very powerful expression: “do not be afraid of them” and, which he later repeats with the same force. It seems that this text reveals a human reality that we all experience at many moments in our lives: fear. Fear appears in this text in two directions; on the one hand, fear of the exterior, of how others will react to the words, life choices, spirituality, denunciations and announcements of what really gives meaning to life and, on the other, the inner fear of not finding footing and experiencing an unbearable emptiness, dread, doubt, distrust.
Exterior fear is a consequence of inner fear. That inner fear arises from positioning ourselves before life by allowing thoughts, beliefs, wounds, existential voids, to direct our choices and decisions. We seek tangible certainties that immediately calm the anxiety of not feeling secure and in control of life. When one connects with the inner space where everything is movement, light, goodness, freedom, strength, one discovers the power of God which is not “another” but the origin of existence whose presence sustains life and impels it to unfold in all its richness. Therefore, “there is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be made known”.
It is essential to rely WITH CONFIDENCE on the depths of who we are, to be more aware that this is our true life, our positive pole and that it cannot be annihilated by anything or anyone; our true self is not made by human hand but by the divine breath that creates us at each instant: “do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul”.
The fundamental question that these verses pose to us invites us to stop with complete honesty: What directs my life—fear or trust? Sometimes we are conditioned by fear of external judgments, of failure, of loss of status, of not fitting in, of unwanted loneliness. The Gospel does not despise these fears, but rather offers a deeper way out: to be aware that our life is made of a loving essence that even our hairs are all counted. Let us not be afraid because our dignity is renewed at each instant. Let us live from the trust that comes from knowing ourselves connected to that God who invites us to be credible and coherent before the world.
