In the Gospel (Mt 10,26-33) we find a beautiful account that reveals God’s tenderness toward us. This text fills us with confidence, dispels our fears and can help us give a brave and joyful witness to the Good News of Jesus. Jesus speaks to the disciples in a context of uncertainty and repeats to them three times a key expression: “Do not be afraid.”
This insistence of Jesus that we not be afraid is not accidental. It is an invitation not to let ourselves be dominated by fear. Fear, when it becomes master of our life, disorders our perception: it magnifies threats, distorts relationships, it blocks us and limits us.
We must not be afraid because for God we have an incalculable value. We are his masterpiece. Thus, in the passage from today’s Gospel we see a precious example of how God values us. In Jesus’ time, sparrows were the cheapest birds in the market. They were the food of the poorest. With a coin of little value, one could buy two sparrows. And each of these creatures, which seem insignificant, is taken into account by God, has a value for Him. And us, how much are we worth to God? Certainly, we are valuable to Him. “We are two grains of sand, but God with grains of sand stops the sea,” expressed Mn. Jacint Verdaguer.
In the Kingdom of God there is room for all, and especially those insignificant little sparrows, the smallest ones. God never forgets the weakest; he has the name of all tattooed on the palms of his hands (cf. Is 49,16). God knows even the smallest detail of our life; nothing about what we are is indifferent to him.
Jesus encourages us to be brave and to transmit his message with joy. Let us not be afraid to welcome this message and, as Saint John Paul II said at the beginning of his pontificate, let us not be afraid to open the doors wide to Christ. Only if we know him and welcome him will we be able to love him, follow him and give witness to him with our words and our works.
Dear brothers and sisters, God knows what is in the hearts of people. We are fragile, with weaknesses and imperfections, but God loves us as we are. God’s love is free and unconditional. In a world in which we constantly have to prove what we are worth and reach objectives, it relieves us and fills us with peace, confidence and joy to believe that we have an immense value for God. We are valuable in his eyes. And we are so regardless of what we do or what we have.
