In a few short years, we have moved from a deeply religious society, where Christianity played a decisive role in people’s lives and in social coexistence, to a more secular, unbelieving lifestyle, where the religious is losing importance.
Accustomed to a “Christian society” where the religious was visibly present in our streets, squares, schools, and homes, many believers feel unease and suffer before this new situation.
Even more. Almost without realizing it, we can come to think that the Gospel has lost its former power, and Jesus’ message no longer has the force or conviction for modern man.
That is why it is necessary to listen carefully to Jesus’ parable. Despite its apparent insignificance and modesty, the Gospel continues to hold a powerful capacity to “save” humanity from what dehumanizes it. We will hardly find anything or anyone else that can give a more human and liberating meaning to our lives.
It is true that, in order to exercise its liberating force, this Gospel must be presented faithfully, in all its truth, its demands, and its hope. Without distortions or cowardice. Without deliberate partiality or interested manipulation.
It is also true that the Gospel requires sincere acceptance and total openness. And there are many factors—such as wealth, selfish interests, or cowardice—that can choke and nullify the efficacy of Jesus’ word.
But the Gospel continues to have an unsuspected humanizing energy today. To forget this would be a regrettable mistake for modern society. In any case, we believers must remember that it is not a time to “harvest,” but a time to sow with faith in the renewing force enclosed in the Gospel.
