The Gospel sometimes says very profound things with simple words. It is enough to read carefully.
This happens with the text of this Sunday. It seems obvious: YOU ARE WORTH MORE THAN THE SPARROWS. It is not meant to compare some creatures with others. What is intended is to awaken trust because, without it, it is not possible to live humanly nor christianly.
That is so. Trust is the basis of human coexistence and of Christian experience. Living fearfully and “armed” against the other person is to block the way to the heart. And if we cannot access the heart of the other, we have failed as persons. Let us not doubt it: the success of life is to enter into the heart of the other. Until that happens, life has not reached its true goal.
How can we overcome the difficulties we face each day in trusting? With whom should we especially exercise the value of trust?
· With the political class: it is possible that we have reasons to be disillusioned with it. But politics, as Pope Francis said, is an excellent form of charity and many practice it well. Although we maintain our critical attitude, let us give a vote of confidence to those who govern us, whatever their political affiliation.
· With ecclesiastical hierarchy: from which many of us feel distant. For better or worse, they help us in faith and we should always listen to them with interest, asking them to draw closer to the real life of Christian communities.
· With those who come to us: because there can be no welcome nor integration if a certain trust does not mediate. Distrust is the basis of exclusion.
We should measure the vigor of our faith by this kind of elementary anthropological values: you trust more and more, the Gospel is doing its work; you are more mistrustful than before, you still have to keep working. If the Gospel does not change us in some way, what use is it to us?
We are beginning summer, a time of greater communication and closeness. It would not be amiss if it were, likewise, a time to renew trust, to dispel prejudices and to draw close to people from whom we feel we have become somewhat distant. Time for trust, that would be a good summer for us.
